  1. If Tyler actually fwlolos Ntozake Shange’s book, the movie should be nothing like his other movies. As to other black filmmakers, hmm Lee Daniels (Precious), Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees/Love & Basketball), John Singleton, Malcolm Lee (Undercover Brother/The Best Man/Roll Bounce), Keenan Ivory Wayans, The Hughes Brothers (Book of Eli/Menace to Society) and George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food/Notorious). Our people exist, just not in droves (and it helps that Tyler is so visible and has people in his corner like Oprah to help spread his name). And in an Essence article I was reading, one of the issues the interviewed filmmakers were discussing was how we don’t go support our movies (i.e. bootleg instead of going to the movie theater) and how the expectations are always so much higher for black movies unlike other movies. Because non-black movies get produced every year that stink, and no one tries to hinder those directors/producers.
