Sade is on the cover of Billboard’s upcoming issue that will hit the stands on August 27. The unconventional soul singer wrapped up her North American tour five days ago and all together gave 36 performances, out of which 16 were sellouts. Sade, who is touring with her similarly named band and John Legend for an opening act, never prepares for her concerts.
“I do the opposite and pretend it’s not going to happen, immersing myself in the details of production as a way of distracting myself from reality,” Sade says. “When the time comes, I don’t test the waters – I just jump straight in.”
Sade who is known for avoiding publicity and focusing on enjoying her private life and raising her teenage daughter, surely doesn’t rush when it comes to making records. After a 10-year break, Sade decided that it was the right time to release her newly recorded material, a 10-song set named “Soldier of Love.”
“She just has a different view of time than the rest of us do,” Sade’s bandmate, Matthewman says, “She’ll think that five years ago was just one year.”
And the material is always truly worth the wait. Sade will continue touring around the world with the final concert in December in Australia. There are talks that she might comeback to U.S. for another “stateside run,” but it’s not definite at all.
“We wanted the show to be spectacular, transporting the audience on a surprising, emotional adventure at the polar extremes of dynamics,” says Sade, “So for one moment they believe they are in a huge stadium and the next an intimate club where each note hangs in the air.This show is the best thing we have ever done as a band. We know these are really hard times, so we better be greater than any expectations. It’s our way to say ‘thank you’ to our audience.”
